How to Add a Product to Your WooCommerce Store

This guide explains how to create both Simple and Variable products in WooCommerce, including product details, pricing, inventory, categories, and images.

Step 1: Add a New Product

  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
  2. In the left menu, click Products.
  3. Select Add New Product.

You will now be taken to the Product Editor.

Step 2: Enter the Product Title

At the top of the page, enter the Product Name.

Choose a clear, descriptive title that customers will easily recognize.

Example:

  • Premium Cotton T-Shirt
  • 16oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle
  • Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Step 3: Add the Product Description

The large editor below the title is the Product Description.

This description appears on the product page and should include detailed information such as:

  • Product features
  • Materials
  • Dimensions
  • Care instructions
  • Specifications
  • Benefits
  • What’s included

Use headings, bullet lists, and paragraphs to make the content easy to read.

Example:

Features

  • 100% Cotton
  • Machine washable
  • Lightweight fabric
  • Available in multiple colours

Step 4: Add the Short Description

Scroll down to the Product Short Description box.

This is a brief summary that appears near the product price and “Add to Cart” button.

Keep it to 1–3 short sentences highlighting the product’s key selling points.

Example:

Soft, breathable cotton t-shirt available in multiple colours and sizes. Perfect for everyday wear.

Step 5: Choose the Product Type

Locate the Product Data section.

From the Product Type dropdown choose one of the following:

Simple Product

Choose this if the product has:

  • One price
  • No variations
  • One SKU
  • One inventory quantity

Examples:

  • Coffee Mug
  • Notebook
  • Gift Card

Variable Product

Choose this if the product has options such as:

  • Size
  • Colour
  • Material
  • Capacity

Examples:

  • T-Shirts
  • Shoes
  • Clothing
  • Products with multiple sizes or colours

Step 6: Set Pricing

For a Simple Product

Select the General tab.

Enter:

  • Regular Price – The normal selling price.
  • Sale Price (optional) – Discounted price shown during a sale.

Example:

Regular Price: $49.95

Sale Price: $39.95

For a Variable Product

Variable products do not have one single price.

Instead:

  1. Select Attributes.
  2. Add an attribute (for example Size).
  3. Enter the values.

Example:

Small | Medium | Large

  1. Check Used for Variations.
  2. Save the attribute.

Next:

  1. Click Variations.
  2. Choose Generate Variations.
  3. Open each variation.
  4. Enter:
  • Regular Price
  • Sale Price (optional)
  • SKU (optional)
  • Stock Quantity (if managing inventory)

Each variation can have its own price.

Example:

Small – $19.95

Medium – $21.95

Large – $23.95

Step 7: Manage Stock

Open the Inventory tab.

For Simple Products

If you want WooCommerce to track stock:

  1. Check Manage Stock.
  2. Enter the Stock Quantity.
  3. Select the Stock Status.

Options include:

  • In Stock
  • Out of Stock
  • On Backorder

Example:

Stock Quantity: 25

WooCommerce will automatically reduce inventory as products are purchased.

For Variable Products

Inventory is usually managed per variation.

Open each variation and enter:

  • Manage Stock
  • Quantity
  • SKU (optional)
  • Stock Status

Example:

Small – 12 in stock

Medium – 8 in stock

Large – 4 in stock

Each variation will track inventory independently.

Step 8: Select a Product Category

On the right side of the page, locate Product Categories.

Choose an existing category by checking the box.

Examples:

  • Clothing
  • Accessories
  • Electronics
  • Gifts

To create a new category:

  1. Click Add New Category.
  2. Enter the category name.
  3. Choose a parent category if required.
  4. Click Add New Category.

Products can belong to multiple categories if appropriate.

Step 9: Upload the Product Image

Locate the Product Image panel.

Click Set Product Image.

You can either:

  • Upload a new image from your computer.
  • Select an image already in the Media Library.

After selecting the image:

  1. Add Alt Text if desired.
  2. Click Set Product Image.

The Product Image is the main image customers see in product listings and on the product page.

Step 10: Add Product Gallery Images

Below the Product Image section is Product Gallery.

Click Add Product Gallery Images.

Select one or more additional images showing:

  • Different angles
  • Close-up details
  • Different colours
  • Product in use
  • Packaging

Arrange the images by dragging them into your preferred order.

Customers can click through these images on the product page.

Step 11: Publish the Product

Review all information to ensure it is accurate.

Confirm:

  • Product title
  • Description
  • Short description
  • Price
  • Inventory
  • Category
  • Product image
  • Gallery images

When everything is complete, click Publish.

If you’re editing an existing product, click Update instead.
